Britain's David Howell will miss the US Open after a wrist injury picked up in practice failed to heal in time for Thursday's tournament tee-off.

The Ryder Cup star has suffered a run of bad luck with a long-term back injury undermining much of the early part of his season.

It had been hoped that he would make a return at Pasadena's Oakmont course, but his injury jinx struck again and he will not have the chance to improve on last year's 16th place.

"It was fairly innocuous and I didn't think I'd done anything damaging," Howell said of his latest setback.

"So I hung around and didn't hit any balls at all until yesterday. I played nine holes here and it felt worse.

"We did a couple of tests this morning with [physiotherapist] Dale [Richardson] and it probably deteriorated a little from yesterday. So that's it I'm afraid."

The news means that Howell is likely to slip further from his world ranking of 35 as his season faces more disruption.

American Luke List will step in to replace Howell in the tournament.
