Ricky Gervais will tonight fire the starting pistol for the Hollywood awards season when he presents the 67th annual Golden Globes from Los Angeles.
The British comedian, star and creator of The Office and Extras, is the first-ever sole compere of the awards, which are being screened live for the first time.
The Invention of Lying star told USA Today he was not anxious about making a small piece of Hollywood history.
"If they were giving me a go at brain surgery, I'd panic, but no one's going to die, so who cares," Gervais, 48, said.
"Maybe my standards are too low. 'How'd it go?' 'Fine, no one died.' 'Well done, Ricky.'
"How hard can it be? I'll go out there and hopefully say some funny things. If I can't do that, I'm in trouble."
Among the frontrunners for the Globes is Up in the Air, which has received six nominations including best film drama and best actor for George Clooney.
Flying the flag for Britain meanwhile will be Daniel Day-Lewis, Emily Blunt, Dame Helen Mirren, Carey Mulligan and Colin Firth.
The Golden Globes, which honour both film and TV shows, are seen as a key indicator for the Oscars later this year.
