Reigning champions Somerset crashed out of the Twenty20 cup after losing to Gloucestershire by 27 runs at Bristol.

The hosts set a target of 227 thanks to a stunning knock of 83 runs from just 34 balls from Chris Taylor.

Australian opener Justin Langer was again the protagonist for the Sabres with an innings of 49 but the 2005 champions were bowled out for 200 with four balls remaining.

Spin-duo Martyn Bell (3-23) and Ian Fisher (2-33) did the damage to seal Gloucestershire's passage into the quaterfinals.

Lancashire's miserable Twenty20 campaign continued after losing to bitter rivals Yorkshire by 15 runs at Old Trafford.

Former England all-rounder Anthony McGrath made 52 to guide the visitors to a target of 156 after winning the toss.

Despite a solid start from the top-order putting Lancashire on 85 for three, they lost six wickets for just 33 runs and finished on 141 for nine at the close to crash to their fourth defeat in six matches.

Former England bowler Rikki Clarke took three wickets as Surrey thrashed Middlesex by seven wickets at the Oval.

Clarke took three wickets for 18 and spinner Nayan Doshi took four wickets as the hosts bowled out Middlesex for 115.

England one-day prospect James Benning made an unbeaten 61 and Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood made 22 not out to guide Mark Ramprakash's side to victory.

Essex ousted Kent by five wickets at Chelmsford after a half-century from captain Ronnie Irani.

Kent were reduced to 158 after batting first, thanks to two-wickets a-piece for veteran Darren Gough and Australian Andy Bichel.

Irani made 53 off 43 balls, which included three sixes, to guide Essex home with eight balls to spare.

Hampshire overcame Sussex by 15 runs in a low-scoring match at the Rose Bowl.

After winning the toss, the visitors stumbled to 112 for five in their 20 overs after Pakistan bowler Yassir Arafat conceded just six runs in his three-over spell along with two wickets.

But the hosts were skittled out for just 97 in reply with Michael Yardy top-scoring with 37, which included three boundaries and a six.

Dmitri Mascarenhas was the hero for the Hawks with four wickets for 23 runs to give Shaun Udal's side victory.

England one-day batsman Vikram Solanki helped Worcestershire claim their first Twenty20 truimph after beating Warwickshire by four runs at Edgbaston.

Solanki made 43 off 28 balls along with a half-century from Ben Vincent and 40 not out from New Zealander Lou Vincent as the hosts set 187 to win.

India fast bowler Zaheer Khan took two wickets as the visitors were reduced to 182 for eight in their chase despite a valiant knock of 75 not out from Jon Trott.

Elsewhere, 2004 champions Leicestershire beat Durham by 32 runs at Grace Road, Northamptonshire edged out Glamorgan by 14 runs at Northampton and Nottinghamshire thrashed Derbyshire by seven wickets at Derby.
