Seamer Matthew Hoggard has been left out of the England squad to face India in the second Test at Trent Bridge after failing to recover from a back injury.
The Yorkshire star dropped out of the summer's first meeting between the sides after pulling up with a problem the day before the match.
"We did not consider Matthew Hoggard for this Test match on cricketing grounds," said chairman of selectors David Graveney.
"He is making progress in his recovery from a back injury and came through a preliminary fitness test at the ECB National Cricket Centre.
"He will be reassessed on Tuesday to see if there is any response to today's test and no decision has yet been made as to whether he will be available for domestic cricket later this week."
The news means that the pace trio of Chris Tremlett, James Anderson and Ryan Sidebottom, who took England to within a wicket of victory earlier today, will be given the chance to continue their impressive form.
Leicestershire's promising youngster Stuart Broad, who took two wickets for 54 runs in the England Lions match against India, has also been called up to the 12-man squad.
The uncapped 21-year-old was denied a debut in the first Test by the selectors' controversial decision to opt instead for Anderson in the absence of Steve Harmison.
He may still have to wait a little longer for his first cap after Anderson justified their faith by claiming seven wickets in a superb performance.
