Gavin Henson inspired Ospreys to a 49-19 win over Guinness Premiership high-flyers Gloucester at Liberty stadium in the EDF Energy Cup.

The 24-year-old Welsh international scored a second-half try and kicked three penalties and five conversions for the hosts who led 21-6 at the break in the openning match of this season's Anglo-Welsh competition.

Centre Sonny Parker crossed the line twice while Shane Williams, Justin Marshall, and Barry Williams also scored tries.

Gloucester, who lie second in the Premiership, were led by Ludovic Mercier who kicked four penalties and one conversion while Peter Richards bagged a try.

Head Coach Dean Ryan made eight changes to the team that beat Northampton last weekend.

The result sees Ospreys top Group A on five points with the other group match between Bath and Bristol taking place on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Guinness Premiership champions Sale notched up their fourth straight victory after beating Newcastle 28-5 at Edgley Park.

The Sharks, who led 14-0 at the break, were led by Oriol Ripol who rammed in two tries while Chris Jones scored a try in the closing stages.

Phil Dowson crossed the line for the injury-ravaged Falcons in the second half.

Full back Daniel Larrechea kicked three penalties and two conversions to put Sale top of Group C which also features Harlequins, and Llanelli Scarlets.

Coach Philippe Saint Andre included Jason Robinson in his starting line-up but rested England international Charlie Hodgson and last year's player of the season Jason White.
