Stephen Hendry revealed he had been suffering with a stomach illness in his 5-4 defeat to Ali Carter in the quarter-finals of the Malta Cup.
The seven-time world champion was diagnosed with gastroenteritis and was given an injection in his hotel room before the match.
He arrived sweating and feeling weak at the venue and was given permission to wear an open-necked shirt.
The Scot led 4-3 before Carter fought back and clinched the match with a break of 30.
Hendry said a chicken and prawn meal at a nearby Indian restaurant may have caused his illness.
He added: "There were times when I thought I wasn't going to be able to play but the injection stopped me feeling quite so bad and I decided to give it a go.
"It was difficult to play but there are no excuses. I did well enough to win four frames so I can't really complain about not winning five."
Carter will face Shaun Murphy in the semis after an impressive 5-2 win over world champion Graeme Dott.
Murphy fought back from two frames down to seal victory with breaks of 58, 86 and 134.
Elsewhere, Wales' Ryan Day booked his place in the last four with a 5-1 thumping over Mark King.
