The family of the 33-year-old Californian who gave birth to octuplets earlier this week has revealed their concerns for the mother, who already has six children.

Her mother, Angela Suleman, told an Associated Press reporter: "[She] is not evil, but she is obsessed with children. She loves children, she is very good with children, but obviously she overdid herself."

On Monday, Nadya Suleman gave birth to eight live babies, six boys and two girls, making her only the second American known to have given birth to live-born octuplets.

However, by Friday it was apparent she had used fertility treatment and already had six children.

It has also been reported that Ms Suleman is single, lives with her parents and has no visible means of support.

Doctors in the US are questioning how Ms Suleman came to be carrying so many babies, given that current medical advice recommends implanting only one or two embryos in a young woman.

There are huge risks associated with women carrying more than triplets, both to the mother and the babies.

Dale McClure, president of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, said: "If this resulted from an IVF treatment, we can say that transferring eight embryos in an IVF cycle is well beyond our guidelines."

Mr McClure added the society would be looking into the matter.
