Union rejects multi-year NHS pay deal

Wednesday, 23 Apr 2008 15:07
Unite has rejected the three-year pay deal offered for NHS workers
Unite, the third largest union in the NHS, has rejected the proposed three-year NHS pay deal.

The union's health sector national committee (HSNC) wants further negotiations which would take into account inflationary trends in the economy.

Health secretary Alan Johnson offered the three-year pay deal earlier this month in the hope it would prevent NHS industrial action.

The deal is worth 2.75 per cent from April 1st 2008, rising by 2.4 per cent in 2009/10 and 2.25 per cent in 2010/11.

This is worth 7.99 per cent in total over the three years.

"We can't be tied to a three-year deal, given the future uncertainties in the economy and the inflationary pressures that our hard-working members are experiencing on a daily basis," said Unite head of health Kevin Coyne.

Unite (TGWU section), which represents 12,000 ancillary and ambulance members, has already recommended that its members reject the three-year deal.
