Police in Scotland are set to question nurses over a fatal hospital infection last year which led to 18 deaths, a report suggests.
Nursing Standard claims officers will interview staff and look into hygiene practice at the Vale of Leven hospital in Dunbartonshire.
The fatal outbreak of Clostridium difficile has been linked to a number of deaths at the hospital and a report identifying failures in hygiene and infection control was passed onto prosecutors last year.
Police are said to be working alongside the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which has been reviewing the hospital's paperwork in relation to infection control procedures.
Strathclyde police have not confirmed whether staff will be questioned under caution, but said a report would be presented to the Crown Prosecution Service at the end of the investigation, which is expected to last several months.
The Royal College of Nursing Scotland said the nurses would meet with legal advisers before being interviewed.
