The number of people believed to have died after contracting swine flu has now risen to 14, the Department of Health (DoH) has confirmed.

There are now 9,718 confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus in the UK.

At present there are 335 people in hospital in England with the virus of which 43 are said to be in critical care.

It is not known for definite whether the 14 people had died as a direct result of contracting swine flu, with many patients suffering from underlying health conditions.

The UK now has the highest number of swine flu cases in the world, behind the US and Mexico.

Chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson said the virus was spreading slowly outside the recognised hotspots but high levels were expected entering into the autumn and the winter.
