New advice for children's urinary infections

It is hard to detect UTIs in under 16s
New advice has been launched to improve the diagnosis and care of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children.

About 82,000 children are thought to suffer from UTIs, which can affect the kidneys and lead to permanent damage if left untreated.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) has published the guidelines for under 16s as the signs and symptoms of UTIs are often difficult to spot in this age group.

Parents confused about the problem can access information on which symptoms to look out for and how to help prevent their child from developing a UTI again.

Medics have also been provided with information about collecting UTI samples and diagnosis procedures as well as effective treatment and follow-up care.

Nice chief executive Andrew Dillon said the new information provides a "handy guide" to help both health professionals and parents.

"UTI in children can be both distressing for the child and worrying for parents, especially where a very young child or baby is affected," he added. "This guideline will help improve the management of UTIs."

Dr Kate Verrier Jones, chair of the guideline development group and reader in child health, commented: "This guideline will be of enormous help to health professionals, providing much needed clarity on when to suspect UTI, and the best ways to assess and manage UTI in children."
