A couple undergoing IVF treatment have spoken of their anger on learning that their last embryo had been wrongly implanted into another woman.
The woman who wrongfully received the fertilisation treatment then took the morning after pill resulting in the loss of the unnamed couple's embryo.
Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, the lady from Bridgend, who lost her embryo, said: "In less than ten seconds our wonderful world was shattered when the senior embryologist stood in front of us and said, 'I'm very sorry to tell you, but there's been an accident in the lab. Your embryo has been destroyed'."
She added: "We were both rooted to our seats. We were stunned and trembling. We held each other tightly, and sobbed and sobbed," she added.
The Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust has apologised unreservedly for the error and has paid an undisclosed amount as a settlement to the couple.
An investigation by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority made a number of recommendations to the hospital to prevent such incidents from recurring which included safety procedures and measures to reduce staff workload.
