Patients can receive both health and social care at the hospital

Health In Focus

The first centre to bring together health and social services under one roof has been opened in Wales today.

South Pembrokeshire hospital, health and social care resource centre has been backed by £6 million in funding and is a partnership between the local council, local health board, NHS trust and voluntary sector.

Included in the development are 40 beds, a minor injuries department, day and home care, radiology, audiology, podiatry, dietetics, speech and language therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and complementary therapies.

Health minister Edwina Hart, who opened the centre, said such integrated services are central to the future of the health service.

"As the NHS marks its 60th anniversary this year, it is fitting that we are opening facilities that will help take patient care into the decades to come," Ms Hart said.

"The NHS of today and tomorrow must be one which better tailors its services to the needs of patients and makes it simpler for patients to access services - and bringing together health and social services under one roof - will help achieve that by providing a single point of contact for patients."
