Jamie Oliver has attacked the government for failing to act on repeated warnings over widespread obesity problems.

Speaking to the BBC, the celebrity chef described the nation's health as a "horror show".

"The health system is crumbling, and when it's gone we'll be so sad because we're breaking it," he said on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, due to be broadcast on Friday night.

"The last time our government did something radical about health was the Ministry of Food."

Oliver, who was repeatedly invited to No 10 after the success of his school dinner scheme, said it would take nine years for the plan to be implemented nationwide.

"We've got a government that's talking about it a lot, I want to know who's running it so they can do a good job," he continued.

The chef added that he had turned down offers to sit on non-governmental bodies and insisted he wanted to stay out of politics so that he could be a "constant pain in the a**e".
