Doubts raised over single-sex wards goal

Not all people are staying in single-sex accommodation, figures show

Just one third of trusts are meeting standards on single-sex accommodation in NHS hospitals, figures obtained by the Conservatives have revealed.

The data suggests the government is not on track to meet its goal of eliminating mixed-sex accommodation.

Just a few weeks ago health secretary Alan Johnson said mixed-sex wards would be abolished within a year.

Despite guidance that single-sex bays should have three walls today's figures show that one in seven trusts are failing to do this.

And nearly two-thirds (64 per cent) of trusts said patients have to walk past bays occupied by the opposite sex to get to toilets and washrooms.

Just 33 per cent of trusts could show that they met minimum standards on bays and access to toilets and washrooms.

"[Labour's] endless promises to eliminate mixed-sex accommodation have never been fulfilled and patients have been badly let down," said shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley.
