The doctor was examined Baby P two days before he died has been suspended from practicing medicine, it has been announced.
Dr Sabah al-Zayyat examined the 18-month-old baby at St Ann's hospital on August 1st 2007. Two days later he died as a result of the injuries sustained at the hands of his mother, her boyfriend and their lodger.
The General Medical Council (GMC) confirmed on Thursday the doctor had been suspended as part of its investigation into the baby's death.
The council had already placed temporary conditions on her registration in August of this year, resulting in Dr al-Zayyat only being allowed to work under supervision.
The conditions are now said to have upgraded to a full suspension.
A post-mortem examination carried out on Baby P revealed he was suffering from a broken back and ribs at his time of death believed to have been sustained before the medical examination conducted by Dr al-Zayyat.
In a statement released last week, the doctor said: "Like everyone involved in this case, I have been deeply affected by the shocking and tragic circumstances of this young child's death.
"My professional career has been devoted to the care of children. I will cooperate with any investigation to identify whether lessons can be learnt from this case."
