Health In Focus

Bar staff, publicans and seafarers are the occupations with the highest proportions of alcohol-related deaths among men, according to government statistics.

Research in England and Wales over the period 2001 to 2005 also revealed that bar staff and publicans were the occupations with the highest proportions of alcohol-related deaths for women.

A similar pattern was observed for other occupations within the drinks, catering and entertainment industry - all of which had high proportions of alcohol-related deaths.

Men working as farmers and drivers were among the low-proportions professions, while women working with children were also ranked low.

One profession that had previously been associated with high a proportion of alcohol-related problems - medical practitioners - was found to have a lower proportion than normal.

The statistics were released as part of the Office for National Statistics' (ONS) Health Statistics Quarterly publication.
