Midfielder Owen Hargreaves has been withdrawn from Manchester United's squad for the remaining stages of the Champions League, effectively ending his chances of playing in the World Cup this summer.
The suggestion is the former England international's ongoing knee problems are still nowhere near over, and he will struggle to maintain his fitness to play for the Red Devils in Europe during the current campaign.
If this proves to be an accurate prediction, it means Hargreaves' chances of being picked in the 23-man England squad for South Africa are slim to none.
Hargreaves has been struggling with his tendonitis problem since before he joined United from Bayern Munich in 2007 for £18 million.
He has made just 25 starting appearances for the Old Trafford club and some pundits are suggesting the 29-year-old may never fully recover to resume his professional career.
