Lewis Hamilton finished back in ninth place after an error-strewn second practice session ahead of Sunday's Brazil grand prix.
The championship leader endured a scrappy session with his wheels locking regularly after he was guilty of making several errors.
Hamilton's title rival Felipe Massa fared much better and finished second behind Renault's Fernando Alonso.
Alonso clocked one minute 12.296 seconds with a few minutes remaining of practice to edge Massa's Ferrari.
Toyota's Jarno Trulli was just under a tenth of a second slower than Massa to finish third while world champion Kimi Raikkonen was fourth fastest.
But it was Hamilton's driving which was the main talking point with the McLaren driver failing to get any higher than fifth and finishing half-a-second off the pace.
The Briton's final run featured more locked brakes at the first corner at the Interlagos circuit and he ended up sandwiched between Williams duo Nico Rosburg and Kazuki Nakajima.
Hamilton's team-mate Heikki Kovalainen was 15th fastest which suggested McLaren had a heavier fuel strategy than its rivals.
Hamilton had earlier been eclipsed by Massa in the first practice session after the Brazilian finished 0.190 quicker than his rival.
The Briton, 23, leads Massa by seven points in the drivers' championship in his bid to become the youngest ever world champion.
