Lewis Hamilton has set the fastest lap time in his McLaren on the first day's practice ahead of this weekend's Hungarian grand prix.

The Briton completed a circuit of the Hungaroring in one minute, 20.554 seconds in the afternoon session - 0.248 seconds clear of the Renault of Nelson Piquet Jr, who is in excellent form after earning his first career podium at Hockenheim two weeks ago.

Hamilton's McLaren team-mate Heikki Kovalainen was third, a further 0.012 seconds behind the Brazilian with Fernando Alonso fourth on a day that promises a happier weekend for Renault in eastern Europe.

The two Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa were fifth and sixth, respectively, in what was a disappointing second session after the Italian team dominated matters in the morning.

Hamilton is searching for a third successive victory in Hungary after impressive drives at the British and German grand prix yielded 20 world championship points, putting him atop the F1 drivers' standings.

Massa is second in the drivers table, four points behind the 23-year-old, with reigning champion Raikkonen third, seven points off top spot.
