Frank Hadden has stepped down as Scotland coach as a result of yet another poor Six Nations campaign.
Hadden, who was appointed in 2005, started his reign well by beating both France and England in the Six Nations the following year, but it has all been mainly downhill from there.
Scotland have finished in the bottom two of the Six Nations in all of the last three championships and despite getting to a respectable quarter-final place at the 2007 World Cup, Hadden failed to meet the demands of the Scottish Rugby federation of winning at least two games in the Six Nations this year.
"Following a presentation at the Scottish Rugby Board, covering a review of the performance in the Six Nations championship, it was agreed with Frank Hadden that a change in head coach is required to allow us to plan fully for the 2011 Rugby World Cup," said Scottish Rugby chief executive Gordon McKie.
"On behalf of the board, I have thanked Frank for his hard work and commitment during his term as national coach."
Hadden said last month, after the Calcutta defeat to England, that he believed he could win the Six Nations championship with the current squad of players.
But while the likes of Wales and Ireland have lifted grand slams, Scotland under Hadden in the same period have failed to come anywhere near to being title contenders.
