Former Tottenham and Leeds coach Gus Poyet has been named the new manager of struggling League One side Brighton and Hove Albion.
The Uruguayan, who turns 42 on Sunday, has been out of work since leaving his role as assistant manager at Spurs in October 2008 and replaces Russell Slade in the Seagulls hot seat.
Brighton chairman Steve Bloom said of Poyet's appointment: "Gus is one of the best up-and-coming young coaches in this country and we are delighted to give him his first opportunity in management.
"His credentials are exceptional and all of the reports we have had on his coaching ability are outstanding."
Poyet has signed a contract until the end of next season, and will be assisted at the Withdean Stadium by former Tottenham team-mate Mauricio Tarrico.
"I am certain Gus will be a big success with the Albion, and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome both he and Mauricio to the club," Bloom added.
The first game for the new management team will be against League One big-hitters Southampton on Sunday.
