Will Greenwood has confirmed his assertion that Sir Clive Woodward has been approached to return to the England set-up.
Greenwood's claims have been strenuously denied by the Rugby Football Union, which insists that no such contact has been made.
The England centre said: "I stand by my sources. People are very wary of using the word lying in these circumstances but I wouldn't have advanced the debate on this issue unless I was sure of the credibility of the people I was speaking to.
"In my professional and in my sporting opinion I remain steadfast in my view, in terms of the credibility and reliability of the people I have spoken to."
Woodward, who led England to World Cup glory in 2003, has been director of football at Southampton Football Club since the ill-fated British Lions tour last summer, in which he was coach.
The former head coach has been linked with a return to the sport as pressure intensifies surrounding the future of current England coach Andy Robinson after the team's poor showing in the Six Nations.
However, Greenwood claimed that the RFU have been trying to get Woodward to mastermind England's World Cup defence for months.
Greenwood has backed Woodward's return to the England set-up, as has former England captain Martin Johnson, who this week said that he wanted to see Woodward return.
