Stuttgart guide

History: Formerly known as the Necktar-Stadion, the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadium in Stuttgart is one of the more high-profile grounds that will play host to this summer's World Cup Finals tournament.

Originally built in 1933 for the German Gymnastics Festival, the stadium has hosted some of the most prestigious sporting events in the nation's history- a previous World Cup tournament in 1974 and the World Athletics Championship in 1993. The arena was also the scene of the highest-scoring European Cup final between Benfica and PSV, which finished 6-5 to the Dutch club.

Stuttgart's famous old ground was also the host of two of the most important sporting events from Germany's political history. The country's first football match as a reunified nation was played at what would later become the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadium (a 4-0 win over Switzerland), as well as the first match played after Germany's years in the sporting wilderness following the Second World War (another win over Switzerland, 1-0).

It was also here that current German national team coach and former Tottenham legend Jurgen Klinsmann played his final game before entering international retirement.
