Google today refused to remove an offensive image of first lady Michelle Obama from its search results.
The image was the first hit for any searches for "Michelle Obama" in Google Images.
The search engine added the notice "Offensive Search Results" above the image and a message declaring: "Sometimes our search results can be offensive. We agree."
The message then linked to page explaining policy on search results.
The image though was later removed by the blog hosting the offending image.
inthenews.co.uk discovered earlier on Wednesday that when the safe search option was turned off in Google Images the picture actually disappeared from the results.
"Google views the integrity of our search results as an extremely important priority," a message from Google said.
"Accordingly, we do not remove a page from our search results simply because its content is unpopular or because we receive complaints concerning it.
"We apologise if you've had an upsetting experience using Google. We hope you understand our position regarding offensive results."
The White House has yet to comment on the image.
