The Google logo is today written in barcode to celebrate the 57th anniversary of the code's patent.

The barcode follows recent Google doodles to celebrate various famous faces, including last week's Ghandi sketch.

Today marks 57 years since US inventors Norman Woodland and Bernard Silver were granted a patent for the system which encoded data in concentric circles.

According to the Washington Post, the barcode on the Google homepage is Code 128 encoded, which is a standard way of encoding ASCII character strings into a barcode.

The doodles are overseen by Dennis Hwang, who joined Google in 2000 and has been using the logo to remind people of particular dates or events.

Other famous faces to have graced the front of the Google homepage include Michael Jackson and Albert Einstein.
