Manchester United were held to a 0-0 draw against Tottenham Hotspur thanks to some impressive defensive performances and a fine game by Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes.
Going into the game Sir Alex Ferguson would have hoped his team could capitalise on the dropped points by Arsenal and Liverpool earlier in the day, and they started the game in a determined fashion.
Dominating possession and buoyed by the return of former-Spurs player Dimitar Berbatov, United seemed set to push for victory from an earlier stage.
However, their domination resulted in little and instead it was the home team who had the first real chance when Edwin Van der Sar was forced to make a fine save to keep out midfielder David Bentley.
Aaron Lennon also forced a sharp save from the United keeper before half time, but the game remained goalless at the break.
In the second half, United continued to push for the winner, and player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo thought he had scored only for his effort to be ruled out for handball.
Gomes then produced a string of first-class saves from Rio Ferdinand, Ji-sung Park and Ryan Giggs as the game wore on.
The Premiership champions, however, were unable to break the deadlock and in the end had to settle for a draw.
Ferguson's men will now head to Japan for the FIFA Club World Championship.
