Match winner Wayne Rooney spoke of his delight at scoring the deciding goal in the Carling Cup final against Aston Villa as Manchester United ran out 2-1 winners at Wembley.
Rooney came off the bench for the injured Michael Owen to score another headed goal from an Antonio Valencia cross to win the game for United. James Milner had opened the scoring for Aston Villa and Owen equalised for the holders.
Rooney, who had a slight virus before the game, almost doubled his tally but another headed effort rebounded off the post with Brad Friedel beaten.
Rooney commented after the game: "It's a great feeling to win. We probably created the better chances in the game and it was a good final overall. We knew there were spaces out wide and if we attacked them there we would create chances especially given the form of Valencia.
Asked if he felt sorry for Owen, who had to leave injured, Rooney said: "Owen looked sharp today and took his goal really well and hopefully he will be back soon."
Rooney refused to be drawn on the controversial decision by referee Phil Dowd to refuse to send Nemanja Vidic off for a professional foul but did state that winning titles are his priority not scoring goals.
"No, not at all, my sights aren't on Ronaldo's tally of 42 goals they are on the medals," he confirmed.
