At least 1.3 million vehicles have been recalled by General Motors (GM) in the US following the discovery of a power steering problem.
It is believed the issue may have led to 14 crashes, as drivers have reported difficulty when steering the vehicle under 15 mph.
The firm said four models were affected - the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, Pontiac Pursuit and Pontiac 4 - with GM saying drivers may need to use a "greater steering effort" at lower speeds.
Motor safety regulators in the US began a probe in January into Cobalt models after receiving more than 1,100 complaints of power steering failures. The complaints included 14 crashes and one injury.
"After our in-depth investigation, we found that this is a condition that takes time to develop. It tends to occur in older models out of warranty," GM vice president of quality Jamie Hresko said in the statement.
"Recalling these vehicles is the right thing to do for our customers' peace of mind."
In recent weeks Toyota has also been forced to recall hundreds of thousands of vehicles over safety issues with faulty break pedals and steering.
