The Liberal Democrats have lost their only stronghold in a sea of Conservative blue in Oxfordshire as Evan Harris lost by almost 300 votes in Oxford West and Abingdon.

Dr Harris, the party's science spokesman, lost his seat to Conservative candidate Nicola Blackwood.

Writing on Twitter, Dr Harris vowed to contest the seat at the next election.

"Sorry that you guys have to share my disappointment," he wrote.

"Thanks for the messages. I'm OK & will come back from this and re-win."
