The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has announced three further days of postal strikes for next week.
The industrial action will take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday next week, union bosses announced late on Thursday.
The first official strike action began at 04:00 BST this morning, with mail centre staff and postal drivers around the country staging walkouts.
On Friday, around 78,000 delivery and collection staff will follow suit.
Gordon Brown has called the strike action, over working conditions and plans to modernise the Royal Mail, as "self-defeating" and urged both management and the work force to continue talks to resolve the dispute.
Union leaders have blamed business secretary Lord Mandelson of interfering in the negotiations.
Royal Mail has condemned the strikes, describing them as "damaging".
