Many parts of the UK are bracing themselves for further disruption with the return of snow and heavy rain today.
Wales and the Midlands are expected to witness more snow showers, while south-west and south England is forecast to experienced heavy rain.
The poor weather follows the chaos witnessed last week when the UK was covered by the heaviest snowfall in almost two decades.
As the freezing weather continues local authorities are coming under increasing pressure keep roads and walkways salted.
Communities secretary Hazel Blear told Sky News salt was being brought in from abroad, but added: "These are once in 20-year occurrences, so obviously we are not going to keep these stocks all the time, it would be a waste of taxpayers' money."
Stocks were so low in Gloucestershire gritters were sent out last night with table salt to treat roads.
The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for south-west England, London and the south-east, claiming there is an 80 per cent chance of extreme conditions, including heavy rain.
