Fulham's injury woes have deepened with the news captain Luis Boa Morte has been ruled out for six weeks with a fractured cheekbone.
The Portuguese midfielder was taken off during Sunday's clash with Tottenham after clashing heads with teammate Heidar Helguson.
Manager Chris Coleman was hoping that Boa Morte could play wearing a protective mask but the injury has been deemed too serious for this to be considered an option and he must now sit out until the end of October.
"Boa is out for about six weeks and we can't even get a mask to protect him because of the extent of the injury," Coleman said.
"It's quite deep set, so there's nothing we can do about it."
The west Londoners already have a long injury list to contend with, especially in the midfield area.
Jimmy Bullard and Papa Bouba Diop were among several players who were ruled out of the Carling Cup clash with Wycombe, which the Premiership side lost 2-1.
Defender Carlos Bocanegra was forced into an emergency midfield spot but limped off during the game and is now a doubt for Saturday's match with Chelsea.
"I didn't want to play him tonight because of a lack of bodies for Saturday but we had no option," Coleman added.
"Now we don't know if he's going to be available for Saturday. If he's not fit for Saturday then we don't have many people to choose for in midfield."
Diop and French defender Philippe Christanval could be fit for the clash against their local rivals at Craven Cottage.
