The FTSE ended Friday on an 18-month high despite uncertainty over the stability of the eurozone after Germany's Germany's economy minister dismissed suggestions of support for Greece.
At the close of play the London index stood at 5,599.76 - a rise of 72.6 points, or 1.31 per cent.
Schroders led the gains for a second day in a row, rising 6.56 per cent to 1,396p.
Xstrata and Fresnillo also recorded significant increases, up 5.56 per cent and 4.18 per cent respectively.
Resolution Ltd suffered the worst day's trading, slipping 1.86 per cent to 68.75p.
United Utilities Group and Petrofac also fell 1.61 per cent and 1.29 per cent.
