The FTSE 100 finished 0.5 per cent lower but remained over the 4,600 mark, ending the week at 4,608.36.
Weakness in the oil and insurance sectors offset gains in banking stocks, ahead of earnings results out next week.
Standard Life led the index into the red, down 4.67 per cent, followed by BG Group, down by 4.49 per cent and Man Group, trading 3.66 per cent lower.
British Airways made the biggest gains over the day, after first quarter earnings beat analyst expectations, up by 6.08 per cent.
Over in the US, the markets remained relatively flat going into afternoon trading, with the Dow Jones up by just 0.08 per cent and the S&P 500 up by 0.25 per cent.
