The FTSE 100 was down slightly in early trading on Thursday morning.

At 09:06 GMT, the index was down 0.14 per cent - or 7.10 points - to 5,073.32.

After suffering falls in recent days, Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds Banking rebounded this morning.

RBS was up 6.14 per cent to 42.03p and Lloyds Banking rose 4.73 per cent to 83.78p.

Segro rose 3.28 per cent, Fresnillo climbed 2.86 per cent and Prudential rebounded 2.54 per cent after yesterday's larger drops.

Royal Dutch Shell A and B shares were down 3.72 per cent and 3.50 per cent as the firm recorded a 62 per cent fall in earnings and warned a quick recovery was not expected.

TUI Travel was down 2.24 per cent and Standard Life lost 1.87 per cent.

Last night in the US the Dow lost 1.21 per cent and the S&P 500 slipped 1.95 per cent as a fall in new home sales was recorded.

In Asia, the Nikkei was down 1.83 per cent and the Hang Seng lost 2.28 per cent.

Trading in Europe held up this morning, with the Dax up 0.06 per cent and the cac40 up 0.21 per cent.
