The FTSE 100 was down 0.31 per cent at closing, or 16.29 points.
SABMiller extended Thursday's gain, up 0.93 per cent and pharmaceuticals were mostly up, with GlaxoSmithKline 1.05 per cent higher, and Shire up 1.43 per cent.
Despite a bad start to the day for travel, with Thomas Cook and TUI Travel shedding 5.8 per cent and 5.4 per cent respectively, the two top fallers on the FTSE 100, British Airways was 6.6 per cent higher at closing.
Royal Dutch Shell ended the day 21 points higher, 1.18 per cent.
Yesterday the FTSE 100 closed down 1.4 per cent, its biggest one-day fall for three weeks and third daily loss in a row.
