The FTSE 100 ended just below a year-high today, up more than 100 points to 5,355.5.
The London index rose almost two per cent led by mining stocks and positive housing market numbers in the US.
Figures from the National Association of Realtors across the Atlantic showed previously owned US home sales jumped ten per cent in the last month.
As the FTSE 100 closed the Dow Jones was also up to year-high levels.
In London gold prices helped boost the mining stocks.
Eurasian Natural Resources Corp (ENRC) closed up 26p at 883, while Rio Tinto was up by 3.72 per cent, Xstrata rose 2.8 per cent to 1,100p and Lonmin was up almost four per cent to 1,760p.
