Nicolas Sarkozy is undergoing tests after falling ill while exercising, the French president's office has confirmed.

The 54-year-old began "feeling faint" while playing sports at his weekend retreat near Versailles, outside Paris.

"He was immediately seen to by his doctor. He is currently undergoing extra examinations," a statement said.

"Other information will be communicated later."

According to the AFP news agency, Mr Sarkozy suffered a vagal nerve attack while jogging.

The nerve runs from the abdomen to the brain and an attack can involve a loss of consciouness and an alteration of the heart rate.

The Elysee Palace said the president's last medical examination, on July 3rd, showed normal results for blood and cardiovascular tests.

However, he was briefly admitted to hospital in October 2007 for treatment of angina.
