Former Scotland manager Berti Vogts has resigned from his position as head coach of Nigeria following disagreements with the national association.
Vogts claimed he was no longer able to work for the Nigerian Football Association (NFA) after a break down in trust between himself and president Sanni Lulu.
Although Nigeria qualified for the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations they only won one game during the tournament and the team's poor performance displeased the NFA.
However Vogts claims the reason behind his decision to quit was the NFA's lack of support for his training staff which included former German internationals Steffen Freund and Uli Stein.
Vogts said: "Too much happened during and after the African Cup. Most of all I don't have any faith in the president of the Nigerian federation anymore.
"Working together is no longer possible."
The NFA are yet to officially comment on Vogts' resignation but lawyers could be brought in to negotiate the settlement of Vogts' contract, which was due to run until the end of the 2010 World Cup.
The German felt the side he was assembling was progressing well and insisted he had enjoyed his time with the players during the Africa Cup of Nations.
"Working with the team and players was a great pleasure," added Vogts.
He concluded by saying his only regret was that he could not "continue this cooperation and the building of a new powerful Nigerian national team."
A number of former Nigerian internationals, including former Everton striker Daniel Amokachi, have expressed an interest in succeeding Vogts as manager.
