Britain's leading share index the FTSE 100 started Wednesday up 0.41 per cent, or 21.58 points, after finishing down 0.6 per cent at market close on Tuesday.

Last night the FTSE mirrored Wall Street as data showed the US economy grew at a slower pace than had previously been predicted.

But in early trade today the share index was up marginally, led by Randgold Resources, 2.28 per cent, Vedanta Resources, 4.97 per cent, Anglo American, 1.87 per cent, and Rio Tinto, 2.23 per cent.

Lloyds Banking Group was up 1.73 per cent in early trading, following yesterday's shares sale news, which saw Lloyds selling shares at 37p in the UK's biggest rights issue.

Last night the bank was one of the top gainers on the FTSE when the markets closed.

At 09:05 GMT Next was down 0.93 per cent, followed by Royal Dutch Shell down 1.02 per cent.
