Oscar host Hugh Jackman has promised the ceremony this year will involve a few surprises.

The Australian, recently voted People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive, was a surprise choice to host the 81st Oscars and marks a clear change of direction by the show's organisers who usually go for an established comedian.

Although, in a series of interviews ahead of the big event tonight Jackman promised his turn would also be "hilarious".

The 40-year-old told People magazine: "I don't know if the other billion people who watch it will find it funny but I'm finding it hysterical right now. I'm having the time of my life."

He admitted the shows writers were working on getting his Sexiest Man title into the Oscar show, claiming: "They think it's the best bit of fodder they could ever have.

"I think it's one of the first rules of being a host – you have to be self-deprecating and what better way to make fun of yourself than through that?"

In another interview with CNN, Jackman also joked he would be doing the show "drunk and nude", explaining it was the fresh new approach and the "Australian way".

Jackman appears to have been destined to host the event tonight, having named his own son Oscar.
