Bottom-of-the-table Wigan powered to their first back-to-back wins in this season’s Super League, beating Warrington 30-12 on Friday night.
Debutant Stuart Fielden, a £450,000 signing from Bradford, was an integral part of Wigan’s impressive performance, despite not scoring.
Tries from Iafeta Paleaaesina, Nathan McAvoy, Brett Dallas, Sean O’Loughlin and Bryan Fletcher saw the Warriors pull away in the second half, as well as five goals from the boot of Michael Dobson.
Simon Grix and Toa Kohe-Love replied with scores for Warrington but they, and two kicks from Lee Briers, were not enough for the Wolves.
In the night’s other games, Fielden’s former club Bradford erased the memory of their former charge by thrashing Huddersfield 42-16.
Paul Deacon became the club’s leading points-scorer, slotting over seven out of seven conversions to reach 1,834 points and eclipse the previous record set by Keith Mumby.
Leeds Rhinos beat Wakefield 36-20 as former Wildcat Gareth Ellis snagged a brace of tries against his old club.
With the win, Leeds moved to the top of the Super League table for the first time in nearly a year. The triumph may be short-lived however, as rivals St Helens will reclaim pole position if they pick up at least a point against Salford tomorrow (Saturday).
In the final Engage Super League game played on Friday, Hull recovered from a nightmare start to stroll past Castleford Tigers, 28-10.
Things did not look good for Hull as they conceded an Andy Henderson try within the first 20 seconds of the match, Paul Cooke fumbling the kick-off.
But Hull quickly hit back with tries from Motu Tony and Richard Horne, before further scores from Sid Domic, Tommy Lee and Nathan Blacklock secured a club-record tenth straight victory and kept Hull in third place.
