Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero will be number one seed Roger Federer's next opponent after he overcame Janko Tipsarevic 7-5 6-3 7-6 to join the Swiss star in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

The big-serving Tipsarevic had accounted for fifth seed Fernando Gonzalez earlier in the competition, but never managed to recreate that form against the clay-court specialist.

Ferrero admits that he will be a distinct underdog as he bids to prevent Federer closing in on a fifth successive singles title at SW19.

"I feel that I'm playing good right now. I know it's difficult because he has such a good record here but I have nothing to lose," the 27-year-old said.

Elsewhere on another rain-hit day at the All England Club former champion Lleyton Hewitt outmuscled Argentina's Guillermo Canas 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-4.

The Australian claimed that the stop-start nature of the matches at this year's event have placed a greater emphasis on players' mental strength.

"That's the longest and toughest rain-delayed match I've ever played in. It was a mental battle more than anything but I felt like I handled it pretty well," he said.

Russian Nikolay Davydenko made short work of Frenchman Gael Monfils with a 6-3 7-5 6-3 win in their third-round tie.

Marcos Baghdatis now lies in wait for the sixth seed in the fourth round.
