Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson praised Cristiano Ronaldo after the winger grabbed a hat-trick in the 6-0 win over Newcastle.
The United talisman incredibly scored his 22nd goal of the season as his team climbed back to the top of the Premier League on goal difference after Arsenal were held at home by Birmingham.
Ronaldo had been linked with a world record move to Real Madrid earlier in the week, and after today's display, Ferguson will be more anxious then ever to keep on to his prized asset.
"[The hat-trick] was always coming," said Ferguson, after Ronaldo claimed his first hat-trick in a United shirt.
"He's been close on so many occasions and today he's capped a fine performance. Twenty-two goals is fantastic, incredible.
"We wondered if he could match last season - well why not? His decision-making is better all the time, I think he can do it."
United had to wait until the second half to score all their goals. Carlos Tevez (two), and Rio Ferdinand were the other scorers.
Ferguson felt his team were a bit guilty of trying to score the perfect goal. He said: "I thought there were too may individuals in the first half trying to walk the ball into the net.
"They then relaxed and expressed themselves - it was a marvellous performance. Everyone played their part, some of the play was absolutely outstanding and you couldn't fault it."
Ferguson unsurprisingly backed his team to retain their league title this year, but admitted it was a "hard league" and that "the points total [for winning] could be lower this year".
