Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that his side have not surrendered a crucial advantage to title rivals Chelsea by dropping three points against West Ham today.
The league leaders surprisingly lost 1-0 to a resurgent Hammers side under Alan Curbishley, while Jose Mourinho's Blues proved their resilience if nothing else by coming from behind twice to defeat Everton 3-2.
But Ferguson, whose team still lead the champions by two points at the summit of the Premiership, denied that Chelsea are "on a charge".
"It's not been a great day for us in the sense that we dropped three points and they've come from behind, which is a bit of luck for them in that situation. The championship race was not going to be decided in December anyway," he said.
"But we've got to show our mettle, that's the hallmark of champions. This team has shown that many times in the past, and this team is young enough to be able to do that."
Curbishley meanwhile was in a jubilant mood following his first ever victory over Manchester United as either a manager or a player.
Nigel Reo-Coker's late second-half strike was enough to hand the east London side the win, although they still ominously occupy 18th place.
Curbishley said: "There has been a lot of criticism of the players and they have got to answer that and face the music."
