Sir Alex Ferguson admitted Gary Neville deserved to be sent off in Manchester United's 2-0 win over Barnsley in the Carling Cup.
The United captain was shown a straight red card in the second-half at Oakwell for a challenge on Adam Hammill, leaving his team to finish the game with ten-men for the second time in three days.
Speaking after the game, Ferguson conceded: "He's caught the boy, not high, but just above the ankle and I think that in the present climate the referee is probably correct."
The Carling Cup holders progressed into the quarter-finals thanks to goals from Danny Welbeck and Michael Owen, who Ferguson praised after the game.
"It's a fantastic goal, unbelievably good feet, quick and a marvellous finish. It was a great, great goal," he said.
The United manager completely overhauled the side that lost at Liverpool, naming youngsters such as Rafael, Fabio and Gabriel Obertan in the starting XI, and believes their performance deserved a victory.
"Well it was a cup tie and Barnsley have worked very hard. They put a lot of effort into the game and they had one or two chances after we went down to ten men," he said.
"I think at the end of the day we've just about got through and probably deserved to get through."
