Mark Hughes has received the backing of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who called Manchester City's decision to fire him "unacceptable".

Ferguson, the manager of City's bitterest rivals Manchester United, hit out at the Eastlands club's owners, headed by chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, after they chose to replace Hughes with Roberto Mancini last weekend.

Despite taking charge of the team for the 4-3 victory over Sunderland, Hughes was widely tipped to lose his job in the papers on the morning of the game.

And Ferguson said the way the club conducted themselves in not informing the Welshman of their decision until later in the evening was poor.

"It was unacceptable behaviour," he said.

"It doesn't matter whether you have lost 20 games or two, there is a way to treat people."

Ferguson was himself given the backing of his bosses at United after going through a bad patch in the first couple of years at Old Trafford.

And he criticised the lack of decency among football's money men in the current climate of instant gratification.

"For some reason Christmas seems to bring out the worst in directors. I do not know how you can do something like that," the United boss continued.

"From Saturday morning the rumour mill was working and Mark must have realised it was his last game.

"It was a terrible position to be in."
