Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed England right-back Gary Neville may need surgery to cure his long-term calf injury.
The Manchester United captain, who played in Saturday's 2-1 win over Sheffield United, has been suffering with the problem with his right calf since the World Cup.
But the left calf has been troubling the 31-year-old recently and he is being monitored by United's medical staff.
Ferguson said the full back may need an operation to put an end to the troublesome injury.
"Gary came through Saturday's game okay and he trained on Monday but obviously, the injury has been a concern," he said.
"We are holding our breath hoping it doesn't happen again because if it does we will have to take a long-term view and do something about it.
"If it keeps going on and on and on, we might get to the new year having lost him for a long period."
Neville, who has not played for England since August because of the injury, is expected to play in United's crunch match with Celtic in the Champions League on Tuesday at Parkhead.
Ferguson added the problem needs to be sorted out soon with the title battle with Chelsea hotting up.
"If he carries on fine, then we get the bonus, but we need to assess it and try to get to the reason why it's happening this build up of fluid," he said.
"If it was just the one calf we would be saying to ourselves we are going to have to take our time, but when it gets in the left calf it suggests it's a bit different."
United's game with Gordon Strachan's side takes place, five days before their heavyweight battle with Chelsea at Old Trafford.
