Sir Alex Ferguson has launched a scathing attack on Liverpool ahead of the new Premier League season, claiming they will not win the title this year regardless of the movements they make in the transfer market.
Ferguson's Manchester United side have won three straight league titles since 2006/07 but were pushed hard by the Reds last season, winning the trophy by four just points.
And although midfield playmaker Xabi Alonso, who has since been sold to Real Madrid, was an integral part of the Liverpool setup, Ferguson claims his absence will have no effect on Rafael Benitez's challenge - as it will falter regardless.
"I don't know if it will make a difference, Alonso going," the Scot explained.
"He is a good player but I am not sure whether losing him will affect them. The thrust of the Liverpool team is really all about Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.
"If they stay fit, it improves Liverpool's chances. But Liverpool have just had probably their best season for 20 years, finished up with 86 points, and still finished four adrift.
"It will be hard for them to match that, let alone improve. Other teams will read Liverpool better."
Ferguson will himself take charge of a depleted squad of players this season, having been forced to part with his prized asset, Cristiano Ronaldo, also to big-spending Madrid.
